Dr. Brent Crandon recently traveled to Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala on a mission trip to help the underprivileged with their vision needs. This was Dr. Brent’s 11th trip with V.O.S.H (Voluntary Optometric Service to Humanity). Their purpose is to serve the underprivileged people in developing countries and provide them eye care, eyewear, and even access to eye surgery (where possible). This trip included four Kansas doctors and nine helpers including Dr. Brent’s daughter, Stephanie and his father, Tom. The team examined over 1,000 patients in five days. There were many challenging cases, including severe cataracts, eye infections, blindness, severe myopia (near-sightedness), and astigmatism.
The team took over 3,000 pairs of donation glasses with them give to the patients. Many of which were donated by our wonderful patients at Crandon and Crandon! With these donated glasses, the team was able to improve the eyesight of hundreds of patients. Thank you to all who donated!
Dr. Brent plans to continue his volunteer work in the future, so he asks that you would continue to donate your old glasses you no longer use, because they can be used towards a great cause!
We love to give back to the community – locally and throughout the world. Dr. Brent is an annual volunteer for VOSH, Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity. For over 10 years, Dr. Brent has gone on missions to Guatemala with other medical professionals to improve the lives of those less fortunate.
But he also needs the help of his patients. All the glasses used by the VOSH volunteers are donated and increasing numbers of pairs are needed every year. Patients or concerned citizens can drop off their gently used glasses at the front desk or with the opticians.
Closer to home, the doctors donate their time to give free eye exams and discounted glasses through the Salvation Army, Health Care Access, and Centro Hispano. To be considered or to recommend someone for one of these appointment slots, please contact the entities individually.
Crandon and Crandon is also a contributor to many charities and events in the area, including St. John’s church and Downtown Lawrence.
